Porcelain veneers play a large part in “smile makeover” procedures as they can be used to change the length, shade and texture of the teeth without removing much tooth structure.
Porcelain veneers are essentially porcelain laminates, wafer-thin shells of porcelain bonded onto the front side of the teeth. As the amount of tooth structure needed to be removed is considerably less than that of the conventional crowns, porcelain veneers are excellent solutions to correct problems of stained, discoloured, chipped and slightly crooked teeth.

However, if the tooth is already badly broken down or heavily restored with large filling, they may not be enough tooth structure (enamel) for the porcelain to bond to.
Non preparation Porcelain Veneers
Some porcelain veneers systems advocated that there is no need for removing of tooth structure for porcelain veneers. One of the advantages of such systems is that they conserve tooth structure and patients like the idea of not trimming their teeth. However, for the non- preparation veneers to work, both from the mechanical and esthetic perspectives, case selection plays a very important role. Dentists will have to consider the amount of crowding and the position of the teeth. If there is presence of severe crowding or that the teeth are already in a more protruding position, trying to make veneers without removing any tooth structure may results in a smile that albeit having straight teeth, but may resembles the smile of a horse.
